A useful recommendation starts with the part and the operation, not only a preferred model number.
- Required operations: drilling, milling, turning, threading or a combination
- Workpiece material and maximum dimensions
- Required hole, cutter or turning capacity
- Expected use: occasional workshop work, regular production or teaching

Configuration & options
The same model name may cover different electrical, speed-control and accessory combinations.
- Destination voltage, frequency and phase
- DRO, power feed, variable-speed or head-lift requirements
- Coolant, guards, stand and workholding requirements
- Tooling and spindle interface to be supplied or sourced locally
